Acer Iconia W501 3G - Review

Written by: Lloyd Gallagher LLB.
Date: 10 July 2011

The new Acer Iconia W501 hit the market in New Zealand last month and retailers have been slow to take up its sleek offerings. We suggest that this is a mistake. At a recommended retail price under $1000 NZ Dollars this hybrid tablet has a lot to offer. We purchased one earlier this week and ran it through its paces to provide you with the pros and cons of this new technology.

To begin the New Zealand version comes in both Wifi only and Wifi/3G. We obtained the 3G model to provide you with the best test results. The unit comes straight out of the box with the tablet face and docking keyboard both sporting a sleek black look that dazzles the eye. At first look the unit has two cameras, one front facing and one rear, to allow for full video conferencing through Skype or other communications software.

Stock standard the unit comes with 32GB of memory on an SSD drive. However, it also has a memory slot for an SD card that can give you additional drive space of upto 32GB at 2mb/s transfer speeds. Sorry the new 64GB chips will not work in this unit as yet. It comes pre-packed with Windows 7 32bit Home Premium (can run 64 bit) and other packages which takes up approximately 20-29GB of your available space. This is why we recommend the additional 32GB SD card so you can store your documents and work without reducing your main drive.

It is noted that some of the pre-packaged software may be un-required so first of you should remove that which you will not use. This will help reduce the drive usage and increase performance from unwanted software loading in the background. While we applaud Acers inclusion of this software it would be nice to have some of it set to install on first use. Acer have, however, seen fit to include McAfee Anti Virus with the unit so if you do not have virus protection you can be assured of coverage.

Specs
Processor and memory
The unit sports an AMD C-50 dual core processor running at 1Ghz with DDR3 memory of 2Gb (NZ Standard). The video controller is an ATI Radeon HD6250 Graphics chip that shares memory from the main DDR3. It has an external HDMI port that allows you connect straight into a TV hassle free but does not come with the cable so make sure you purchase this before leaving the store if you wish to use it.

Display
The display consists of a 10.1 inch WXGA LCM running at 1280x800 maximum resolution. Its screen responsiveness to touch is comparable to any apple ipad or iphone that I have used.
Webcams
The webcams (front and rear) run at 640x480 resolution for video calls. This makes it perfect for Skype and has tested well under use.

Microphones
The unit sports dual mics to increase performance and noise reduction. In use they perform well and allow the use to wander around freely without the need of a headset. However, the sound comes across a little tinny to the receiver so we recommend the use of a bluetooth headset or wired headset for better quality. In saying this, however, conversations where readily understood and, despite the reduced quality, posed no problems.

An additional note, however, when using wireless users may experience clicking and popping sounds in the background. To minimize this (it will never disappear 100% due to the wireless framework) go to the sound options in control panel, then recording tab, properties of the microphone, then click the levels tab and turn the microphone boost to 0. This will reduce the popping to a mild background noise. The issue is only present on wireless connections so Ethernet is the best way to go when you have it.
Connectivity
The 3G bluetooth and Wifi connections are easily turned on and off through the Acer Ring. The unit supports a Huawei EM770W 3G module that supports GSM/GPRS/EDGE/HDSPA and UMTS/WCDMA so most countries are covered. The bluetooth module is v3.0 and includes EDR. Wifi is IEEE802.11 b/g/n standard and the docking keyboard also has a cabled fast ethernet port for those that want it. And while we tested it, we found that the wifi provided just as clear use for Skype and video playback.

Dimensions
The unit is 275 (width)x190 (height) x15.95 (thickness,) the thickness being needed as it ports that HDMI and two USB ports. Its weight is 970g for the hand unit and an addition 670g for the dock. The main unit is comparable in weight to an 800 page book making it comfortable to carry.
Heat
The unit has a cooling vent on its top (or right side if you have it in portrait) which the user is able to feel warm air flow from. This, however, creates no concern as it is usually away from the hand. Left handers, however, may need to watch their hand placement as covering the vent is not a good idea.

Usability
We found the unit to be extremely user friendly with its touch. However, Microsoft still have not quite got touch screens designed well in windows seven as the resizing of windows takes some practice. This, however, does not take away from the fun of using the device. The touch screen sports multi touch so zooming in and out is a breeze.

As the unit is windows 7 we have been able to use all our favourite software without hassle, noting, however, that it is a small processor so using high ended programs such as Adobe Premier is not practical.

Overall
Overall we found the unit to provide a great supplement to your main computer without the need for a full laptop. This suit seems well suited to students and business people to run their office on the go. It supports full office applications from Microsoft or open office and there is enough space to keep things moving well. We tested office 2007 and found it took only an additional 1Gb of memory leaving plenty of space.

The device, in our opinion, is a rival to the Apple device and beats it when you need proper Office editability and compatibility. We were able to connect to any of our network drives and use one note with ease for office sharing.

Our rating for the device is 9/10 based on its design and functionality for personal and office use.
The unit is now available from our store having passed our 100% guarantee test.

  2. Bought one of these today, was wondering do you know if the RAM or the SSD drive is upgradeable at all?
seems a bit sluggish with only 2gigs of ram, I'm sure it would run much better with 4gig,

  3. SSD and RAM is not upgradable. You have to by the version you want unfortunatley.

The 32GB provides a slot to add another 32GB SD card. if you want more then a 64GB version would be needed.

I found that removing a lot of the uneeded software helped its performance. AVG is a better performer than the packaged AV for it for example.

I run MS Office 2007 fine, but it is not yet designed for desktop speed.

  4. what are the other unnecessary pre loaded programs that could be removed?

  5. There are a number of items such as removing the norton Anti Virus pre install and going to AVG free, which has a smaller memory footprint.

Also many of the Acer preinstalled components can be taken out as long as you retain the following:

    Acer 3G Connection manager
    Acer Ring
    Acer Crystal Eye Webcan
    Acer Device Control
    Acer power manager
    Acer Touch Application Suite

This provides full functionality for the device and lets you add what you want and use.

You can also disable many MS startups such as Media center (unles you use it) and windows live essentials.

In MSconfig (run from the start, run command line) go to startup and uncheck

    Acer Ring Launcher
    Apple Push
Groove Monitor (if you are running office apps)
    and itunes

Do not diable anything else as it will upset the functionality of the drivers.

Doing this gave me a 30% processor boost and 1042 free memory for executions that speed the device up drastically.

Hope that helps and feel free to contact me if you have any issues.

    2. Sorry to hear you are having performance issues. I would be happy to help you out with performance; however, I am in NZ timezone so it may be difficult to coincide the time Zone.

I would also need details of what you are running on the unit and what you are trying to use it for. Remember it is an mobile processor so do not expect it to run games or high ended tasks, as I discuss above in the original blog post.

Feel free to outline what you are using it for and the software you have installed via email to sales@lgholdings.co.nz and I will see what I can do to help.

Also I would look into the windows 8 upgrade, discussed in my recent blog posting, as performance improves by 60%.

  6. Hi, can we run MS Office 2010 on this machine?

    1. Yes. In fact it comes with office 2010 which you need to license. It is a full windows 7 OS so you can run all flavours of Office and it is fully wifi and ethernet compliant so it will talk with all your other computers/servers for One note etc.

  9. Hi
Can we use stylus for handwriting and scribbling in One Note etc.
    Thanks

    1. Yes. But you need to make sure its a resistive stylus. Targus does a nice version for a low price.

  10. You've been using this for almost a year now. Any update on its performance? I heard that android may also be installed as dual boot on this machine. I don't know how true this is. I'm deciding for just an Android tablet or something that can function as tablet but can also do what a laptop does (in connection with office functions and storage which the USB port seem to satisfy) at the same time.

    1. The unit is fine for reading, web browsing, I use 3G to do this on the move, and Office. USB functions work great and it networks in with everything. It will do everything windows 7 does. However, it does not have the performance of a laptop or notebook tablet. So do not buy one if your looking for processing power.

You can dual boot, and run linux on it as it is a full PC. Howwver, not all drivers will work so you need some knowledge of these OS's for 100% functionality. Note also that you need a seperate USB DVD Rom drive to do that. Cannot boot and install of USB.

      Hope that helps :)

  11. Great review. I'm looking to buy a unit here in Canada, but to test Win8RP. Have you considered doing this as well?

    1. Was considering it. However, I will wait for a couple of months until Microsoft resolve the issues they always seem to have on launch :)

Let me know how you get on and we can compare notes.

  12. I'm wondering if it might connect to a projector through the usb-VGA adapter? Presentation is one of features that I need. Do you have any ideas about this? Thanks.

    1. It has a standard HDMI port which I would recommend for the projector rather than the USB VGA. There are a number of HDMI to vga cables and adapters on the market at low cost. I have used an HDMI to vga cable and it works well with my brother projector.

However, if the USB VGA is your only choice then it should work fine as they are standard USB ports with windows 7 drivers. I have not tested the usb to vga but do not see why it would not work.

      Hope that helps :)

    2. Your advice gives me more choices. Thank you so much.

One more, is is possible to re-install Windows 7 via USB? I don't really understand what you said in comment above about "Note also that you need a seperate USB DVD Rom drive to do that".
      Thanks again!

    3. No problem.

On the USB Drive question: you need to purchase an external usb DVD drive to do any os boot installs. The iconia does not allow booting from a usb stick device such as a USB flash drive. This is because the bios does not have the configuration options to allow it.

So you must purchase an external USB DVD rom drive and plug it into the usb slot. This will allow for boot from the windows7 dvd and you can re-install. this is the same for the recovery disks provided from Acer. Here is a YouTube video to help http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=da-hZYIh1Hk&noredirect=1

Note this video is for the w500 but the process is the same for the w501.

  14. I was wondering if this AMD C-50 can support 'Bluestacks' (an application that runs android apps on win 7) because i found out that intel atom cannot install certain games because of atom limited the graphics thingy for better battery life. But Bluestacks run perfectly on other processors.

    1. Cause you asked I have installed it to find out :)

Having installed the application I can confirm the Iconia does support the display requirements needed to run BlueStacks.

However, after install the application did appear to crash and required a restart. Upon restarting I was able to run all apps tried, including BBC news, Twitter Defender (basic shotem up app), and a range of others. I also note that the performance is not the greatest. The software is in Beta for a very good reason a number of things are not quite right yet.

You may find that the app often needs a restart, something that should resolve after beta. I do caution users though that the iconia resources are heavily used by this app and many may find that it is not worth the effort due to the slow performance.

My personal opinion, is it is not worth it as it is fairly unusable due to performance issues and the need for multiple restarts between apps.

So, quick answer is YES it can; long answer is yes it can but it is not worth it due to performance sucking.

  15. Hi, i read a forum about this w500 said that the ssd can be upgraded? Is it true? How about dual boot?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. As I understand it yes the W500 can have certain upgrades applied. However, I have not tested this so I am not an authority for it :)

As for Dual Boot I have not tested either model with it. There is no reason why not as it is an outright computer. However, I have heard of driver issues and other problems with some of the hardware used.

If you have any success in this line we would love to hear from you on your successes of failures.

  16. Best thread on the net, well done. Mt W501 did not come with any gps map software and google seem only to support iphone or android for he mobile market. Can you know how i can install gps map software? Thanks Simon-London U.K.

    1. First let me note that only the Android version of the W501 has a digital compass so be sure to understand that the GPS functionality will not work on the windows version discussed above.

The latest drivers for the Tab can be gotten here and are needed for full functionality

      http://www.acer.com.au/ac/en/AU/content/drivers

Once installed the OS should detect and start using the GPS functionality with any Android GPS app you use.

See this link for details trouble shooting of the Android Tab
